Chapter 9

The moonlight sparked off the diamond head of a walking stick as the boatman handed a man ashore, followed by a cloaked woman. The man moved into the light, but even before he did, Malcolm knew.

“Prince Talleyrand,” he said, going forwards to greet the statesman. “I wondered if it was you. But I wasn’t sure Grandfather would actually summon you.”

Talleyrand gave an amused smile. “I think you underestimate how seriously we all take your predicament, my boy.”

“Doro.” Malcolm leaned forwards to kiss Dorothée de Talleyrand-Périgord’s cheek.

Dorothée squeezed his arm. “It’s good to see you, Malcolm.” She held out her hands to Mélanie. “Suzanne. Mélanie. Chérie.”

Mélanie ran forwards to hug her friend. Malcolm saw the way her arms closed tight round Dorothée. He could guess what it meant to Mel to see a friend in the midst of everything. He couldn’t deny he was glad to see them both himself. And yet, despite the fact that he had been half expecting it, Talleyrand’s arrival was a damnable complication.
